Obituary of Jose M. Silguero Sr.
Our beloved Jose M. Silguero Sr., age 95, resident of San Marcos, Texas was called by our Heavenly Father on Thursday, June 13, 2019.
He is preceded in death by his 1st. wife, Innocencia Maria Silguero; 2nd wife, Ventura Silguero; son, Armando Silguero Sr.; great great granddaughter, Julie Marie Ortiz; and son in law, Tony Ramirez.
Jose Silguero Sr. was born in Staples, TX on March 26, 1924 to
Nicolas and Irene Silguero. He had an older brother, Jesus “Chuy” Silguero.
Also had half brothers and sisters. He met and married Maria Inocencia
Garcia from Maxwell, TX. Jose and Maria were migrant workers. They
traveled between Texas and California picking all different kinds of
products; such as cherries, cotton, and oranges. During hot summers in
California, he was a member of the “Hot Flames” forest fire-fighting outfit.
They had 8 children: Irene, Jose jr., Socorro, Rose Mary, Susie,
Graciela, Armando and Connie. Family was very important to Jose. He
always attended birthday parties, baby showers, and graduations of his
children and his children’s children. At his death he had 20 grandchildren,
30 great grandchildren, 10 great great grandchildren with two more on the
way.
Jose was a self taught problem solver though he only had a 2nd grade
education. He was known in the community of San Marcos as a plumber,
electrician, carpenter and car mechanic. He always was willing to help
anyone he could with his skills. When the people in the community needed
help, they would say “Hablale al Señor Silguero, él te ayuda.” (Call Mr.
Silguero, he will help you).
Serving God was a priority in his life. He was a member of the men’s
group, “Santo Nombre,” at St. John Catholic Church of San Marcos. And
also a member of the Guadalupanas, known as a Guadalupano. He
performed labor work for the church as well as participated in fundraisers.
His favorite past time was attending Spanish dances at Cuauhtemoc
Hall in San Marcos. He was known by everyone and was invited to attend
many private functions.
Many years after the death of his first wife, Jose married Ventura
Mendez. Together they were a common sight at church fiestas, family
gatherings and dances at Cuahtemoc.
On the afternoon of June 13th, he passed away peacefully surrounded
by family. Though Jose Silguero Sr. will be missed by all, there is a great
reunion going on in Heaven!
