Please share a memory of Juanita to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beloved Juanita N. "Janie's Gorditas" Hernandez, age 91, resident of San Marcos, Texas was called by our Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 8, 2021.
Juanita was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65yrs.: Pablo G. Hernandez; daughter: Gloria H. Villanueva; son: Refugio N. Hernandez; parents: Agapito & Santos Natal; sisters: Isabel N. Barrientos & Rosita V. Natal; brothers: Tranquilino V. Natal, Juan V. Natal, Frank V. Natal, Jaime V. Natal, Pedro V. Natal, Antonio V. Natal and Joe V. Natal; granddaughter: Barbara V. Martinez; great grandson: Adian Zulaica and son in law: Hector Lopez.
Janie was a highly spirited, fun-loving, and generous person. She loved being around her family
and loved cooking for everyone. She was always in the kitchen. Her home always smelled like
food. She made the best tamales. Her hobbies included: praying daily books, knitting, talking to
friends and family on the phone, watching the daily Mass and her novelas on TV, and of course
playing her lotto scratch off cards. She also was a big Texas Rangers and Spurs fan. She also
loved animals. She enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and Mexico with her
husband Pablo and friends. On one of her trips to Mexico she learned about Gorditas, and that
is where it all began. She was the first to start selling gorditas at the church fiestas. Then she
opened a little stand. Then finally she opened the famous restaurant, Janie’s Gorditas.
Before she got into the restaurant business she worked as a cook at Community Action Head
Start for many years.
Janie was a very devoted Catholic, an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She was a
member of the Hijas de Maria as a young lady. After she married, she joined the Archicofradia.
She was one of the original members when it was started in 1948 and is the oldest after 73
years. She has always been a devoted active church member. She volunteered cleaning the old
and new church on Saturday mornings. She helped prepare the alter for Christmas, Lent, Easter,
etc. She taught Catechism on the front steps of her house. She was a member of the Austin
Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, a Eucharistic Minister, was in the Bereavement when it
first began, was in the Cruzada del Rosario, was a Cursillista, was in the Coro Mariachi, and
volunteered at various Church Fiestas. Janie was also a member of the G.I. Forum and a judge
for L.U.L.A.C. in the Cinco De Mayo menudo cook off. Janie lived life to the fullest with her
husband, family, and friends.
We thank the Lord for giving her to us for as long as we had her..."we love you!" Her legacy and
spirit will always continue through us, we will miss you, but you will never be forgotten in our
