Please share a memory of Adam to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beloved Adam Harwood, age 60, resident of San Marcos, Texas was called by our Heavenly Father on Thursday, April 7, 2022. Adam is preceded in death by his parents: Charles & Rose Harwood and brother: Barry Harwood. Adam’s parents took him around the world when he was young. He was well traveled. He spent summers in Rome with his brother, Barry while Barry worked on his PhD. At age 11, he became the youngest member of the American Numismatic Association to promote and advance the study, research and appreciation of coins, monetary objects, medals and other related items. Adam received his Bachelor of Science in Geology from UC Berkley in 1984. He valued learning and continued beyond his initial chosen field of study. In the zoology Department at UT Austin, he worked for Emeritus Dean Clark Hubbs raising the endangered species Formosa Lapetina as part of the longest running cancer research in the U.S. He raised the fish that made it possible to extract aromatase used in research which led to current cancer treatments. He was a practical scientist with a wet thumb. He was able to get fish species to breed in captivity when no one else could. Adam met his wife while he was working in the Zoology building at UT. She was in the art department completing her BFA. She would help him do water changes and feed fish just to spend time with him. Adam also attended the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix, to learn aquaponics and started a stateside aquaponics business that had accounts at HEB and Central Market for many years. Adam followed his passions and found ways to make a living from them, working every day in ways that he enjoyed. His businesses included: Tubs of Taos (NM), 10,000 Waves (NM), High Chapparal (house refurbishing in Lockhart, TX), Turtle Cove Campground (Blanco, TX), Global Aquaponics (online aquaponics sales and a global virtual community), and Two Rivers Trading Co. (New Braunfels, TX) He also used his deep knowledge and love of history to build several antique businesses through the years. He loved buying and selling antiques, doing appraisal and holding estate sales. He also founded, built and ran Lily Pad Farm, named for his proudest achievement, his daughter Lily. He was a teacher of the things he loved. He was always open to share his knowledge of antiques and aquaponics. His door was always open and his phone was always on. You could go to his for advice. He is survived by his wife of 30yrs.: Susan Harwood; daughter: Lily Harwood; brother: Bruce Harwood; and with other family members and friends.
